The Department of Journalism and Media Production provides student resources and opportunities for students to get involved and stay involved.
Whether you attend events, join a professional organization, work as an intern or in the department — there’s always somewhere to be when you are a part of JMP.
Internships
Journalism and Media Production internships provides students with hands-on experience at company or organization (specifically a mass media outlet or public relations setting) where students are able to use the skills learned in the classroom in a supervised, professional environment. Students work as writers, reporters, editors, public relations practitioners, convergent media specialists, and photojournalists at newspapers, magazines, agencies, corporations, nonprofit entities, and other media outlets.

Internship Course Options
Students who wish to enroll in JMP 3980 – Internship in Journalism and Media Production must satisfy the following requirements:
- Be a declared major or minor in the Journalism and Media Production department (certain IDP students will be considered). If you are not already declared, you can do so by filling out the Declaration/Change Major, Minor and/or Certificate Request Form.
- Be approved to undertake an internship by a professor in the program.
- Successfully complete JMP 2100
- Apply for internship credit and be approved before registering for the course.

Students may enroll for 3 credits of internship credit. This course may be repeated for a total of fifteen (15) credits. The following formula is used to determine how much time the student must devote to the internship experience:
1 credit hour = 50 hours of intern work
Students who wish to enroll in JMP 4760 – Advanced Internship in Journalism and Media Production must satisfy the following requirements:
- Be a declared major or minor in the Journalism and Media Production department (certain IDP students will be considered). If you are not already declared, you can do so by filling out the Declaration/Change Major, Minor and/or Certificate Request Form.
- Be approved to undertake an internship by one or more professors in the department.
- Complete 12 JMP-designated hours or more with at least one upper-division course.
- Apply for internship credit and be approved before registering for the course.

Students may enroll for 1-12 credits of internship credit. The following formula is used to determine how much time the student must devote to the internship experience:

Scholarships
The Department offers several scholarships that are available only to our majors and minors. These scholarships help support students in their academic pursuits by alleviating financial burdens, enabling them to focus on their studies, participate in research projects, and engage in extracurricular activities. By providing these financial resources, we aim to foster a community of dedicated scholars who can take full advantage of their educational opportunities, gain valuable experiences, and enhance their overall academic journey.
Additionally, these scholarships encourage excellence and commitment within our programs, rewarding students for their hard work and dedication while helping to cultivate the next generation of leaders in the field.
Journalism and Media Production Scholarships (Listed Alphabetically)
The scholarship was established by the staff of the Rocky Mountain News to honor Gene Amole. He believed strongly in the importance of print journalism and the staff wanted to support future journalists.
The Rocky Mountain News and the Lopez and Bohland families established this scholarship to provide an opportunity for a talented Metropolitan State University of Denver student to finish their education and to pursue a career in journalism.
The Fund is established to honor the memory of Gregory Lee Pearson, by his widow Barbara Heney Pearson, in recognition of this extraordinary man, who for 22 years served as the guiding force, founder and chairman of the Journalism Department at Metropolitan State University of Denver.
Apply to the Greg Pearson Memorial Journalism Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship is open to high school seniors and college and university students attending any accredited U.S. college or university. To be considered, applicants must plan on entering a career in print or digital journalism and be from or living in Colorado.
To benefit full-time MSU Denver students in the fields of marketing, graphic design or public relations.
Larry Strutton Endowed Scholarship Lawrence D. “Larry” Strutton, Publisher and CEO of Rocky Mountain news graduated from the Metropolitan State University of Denver in 1971. The purpose of the scholarship is to benefit a nontraditional student at MSU Denver. The award will be used to cover all or part of tuition, books, fees, and other educational expenses.
The Fund is established to celebrate the life, journalism career, and teaching legacy of Laurence Washington. Laurence was an important part of the Journalism and Media Production Department, serving as a member of the MSU Denver journalism affiliate faculty for twenty-seven years while also advising students working at Student Media.

The purpose of the Phil Lucero Memorial Endowed Scholarship is to recognize and reward technical communication students who have demonstrated excellence in the classroom and who have a passion for their discipline.
This scholarship is open to high school seniors and college and university students attending any accredited U.S. college or university. To be considered, applicants must plan on entering a career in broadcast journalism and be from or living in Colorado.

If you are majoring or minoring in Journalism or Media Production and qualify for work-study through the Financial Aid Office, you are encouraged to apply for available positions within the Department. Before submitting your application, please take the time to read the job descriptions and responsibilities carefully to ensure a good fit for your skills and interests.
Media Studio Technician
The Media Student Technician will be tasked with helping operate and maintain the studios. In addition, they will be integral to students, faculty, and staff using the space to learn, practice, and create media. This position will also be tasked to maintain the equipment room and check in/out gear to students.
