Department of English Scholarships

This spring the Department of English offers four scholarships for $1,000 toward 2024-25 tuition. Below read about our scholarships and learn how to apply.

Available Scholarships

Linguistics Endowed Scholarship

Established by faculty and friends of the Linguistics Program to provide scholarships for students who have a declared major or minor in linguistics. No applications are accepted; the linguistics faculty will select the winner(s) of this scholarship in consultation with one another. In any particular year, this scholarship may have more than one recipient or no recipients.

Gerald Fenger Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Established in honor of Dr. Gerald Fenger, a respected colleague and admired American literature professor.

  • English major
  • GPA of 2.75
  • Have financial need, based on FAFSA or Dreamer application on file with MSU Denver
  • Does not have to be a Colorado resident or US citizen
  • Please submit a researched essay (minimum 1500 word count) on a literary, filmic, or rhetorical topic.

Dr. Paul Farkas Memorial Scholarship

Established in honor of Dr. Paul Farkas, a respected colleague and admired American literature professor.

  • English major
  • GPA of 3.0
  • Taking 12 credit hours during semester scholarship is received
  • Must be a Colorado resident and a US Citizen
  • Scholarship can be received for multiple years
  • Please submit a researched, critical literary analysis (minimum 1500 word count) on topic chosen by student.

Dorothea Brooke Endowed Scholarship

Established by a generous anonymous donor and named for the protagonist of George Eliot’s Middlemarch.

  • English major
  • GPA of 3.0
  • Financial need, based on FAFSA or Dreamer Application on file with MSU Denver
  • Taking 12 credit hours or more during semester scholarship received
  • Does not have to be a Colorado resident or US Citizen
  • Please submit a researched essay (minimum 1500 word count) on a literary, filmic, or rhetorical topic.
